Morpeth All Saints Church of England Aided First School

Week beginning 9th January

Over the last two weeks we have settled back into Nursery following our Christmas break. The children have shared their family Christmas experiences and have enjoyed sharing their My Christmas sheets. Our new friends are starting to settle well into the routines within Indigo Class. Thank you to our older children for helping our new friends to settle and showing them how to access resources.

This week our new friends have been showing us how they can mark make and have been practising their snipping skills.

We have started to learn about Space, following the interests of the children. This week we have been looking at facts about Earth and the Moon. We found out that there are rocks on the moon so on Tuesday we made Moon rock cakes. The children all suggested what items we should have in our space station and we have started to make them together. This week we have made space boots and helmets. We have also started a space log book, which will be added to as the children record more things they have seen on their 'space journey!'

Our letter of the week has been the letter 's'. The children have enjoyed finding things which begin with this letter sound and have made rainbow letter 's'. Next week we will be learning about the letter 'a'. Our number of the week has been the number 6. We have used our bodies to tap, clap, tickle and jump 6 times....... It's sometimes very tricky to remember to stop at 6! Next week Jack has chosen the number 4 for number of the week, so we will be doing lots of things connected to 4.

Our builders yard is developing well and we now have signs and lots of tools. The wet sand is proving to be be very popular to make cement. We have also added a telephone and more hard hats. This will continue to develop with suggestions from the children.

It was snowing on Friday and we all enjoyed playing outside in our snow suits and wellies. We made snowmen together and worked as a team to decide what we needed to build a snowman. Some children decided to be snow ploughs and scraped the snow from the ground, whilst others made snow ice creams and snow castles. We noticed that our wellies made patterns in the snow and we could also make patterns with the plastic rakes. It's was great fun and afterwards we enjoyed drinking hot chocolate back in the classroom to warm us up.

Next week we will continue our Space theme. In addition to this the children have decided they would like to learn how to make a steering wheel and small rockets for our space centre. They would also like to learn how to paint rainbows, draw numbers and make flowers. Sam would like green as our colour of the week so watch this space!
