PSHE / RSHE

PSHE and RSHE here at Morpeth All Saints...

PSHE

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is a highly valued subject within the school. It holds a precious place within the schools ethos and is a subject that is delivered carefully in each class every week. The children are very much encouraged and helped to develop the skills necessary to listen to and value the views of others. Throughout the school circle time is used to discuss issues of relevance to the children in a sensitive and caring way. Policies are in place for the teaching of drug and sex education.

RSHE

Relationships and Sex Education, and Health Education became statutory in Primary schools from September 2020. RSHE will be found within the PSHE curriculum entitlement document under the heading of ‘Changing Me’ and it is also included in the science curriculum. The main resource used will be Jigsaw – The mindful approach to PSHE. Some resources from The PSHE Association may also be used. The RSHE content builds children’s self-esteem, enhances their own sense of self regard to their body image, develops caring and healthy relationships and assertiveness skills in keeping themselves valued, safe and respected. Most of the time, RSHE will be delivered by the children’s class teacher within the weekly PSHE lesson.

Following parent consultations, the current PSHE and RSHE policies were written and shaped to include the content and resources to be used. We are very appreciative of the supportive partnership between school and parents here at Morpeth All Saints, which was also reflected in the helpful and thoughtful feedback given through the parent surveys.

Intent:

The intent of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE)  and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum, aims to equip children with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe and productive life, while also developing their self-confidence, self-esteem and ability to communicate their feelings. We have developed a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. British Values are embedded throughout each topic which support children by preparing them for life in Modern Britain. We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and understand what it means to be a member of a diverse society in our ever-changing world. Our curriculum also makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour and safety, and to their emotional wellbeing. Furthermore, we aim to foster a PSHE/RSHE curriculum that incorporates the understanding of Relationships Education at an age appropriate level so that children will know how to be safe and to understand and develop healthy relationships both now and, in their future, lives.

Implementation:

Our PSHE / RSHE curriculum is delivered using the Jigsaw Programme and The PSHE Association, which incorporates a wide range of child-centred activities to ensure the learning is fun and purposeful for pupils and teachers alike. The scheme has its own assessment system, descriptors and exemplifications, so teachers can see the expected standard of learning that pupils should attain at the end of each unit of work, each year and each Key Stage. Jigsaw PSHE / RSHE contains both formative and summative assessment opportunities that support teachers to assess PSHE / RSHE knowledge, and how these are applied within social and emotional skills development.

Our PSHE / RSHE curriculum has three core learning themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World and incorporates Relationships Education. Knowledge Organisers-Children have access to key knowledge, language and meanings to understand PSHE  / RSHE and to use across the curriculum. All curriculum subjects make a link to PSHE, SMSC and British Values and the language is used consistently by all staff. Assemblies- Specific whole school assemblies and celebration assemblies always make a link to PSHE, British Values and SMSC.

Impact:

Our PSHE / RSHE programme enables children to develop positive and healthy relationships with themselves and their peers both now and in the future. The curriculum prepares children for the next stage in their education and ensures both they and staff value well-being, mental health and good citizenship, as well as preparing them for the adult world. The impact of our PSHE / RSHE curriculum allows children to become confident learners who take ownership of their work and their actions. Children will also understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level and will have positive body images. Pre and post assessment and reflection activities demonstrate the progression of knowledge, skills and understanding. By teaching children to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our PSHE / RSHE programme can tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations and improve the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
